What Will I do as an IT Support Specialist?
IT Support Specialists act as the first line of support, resolving issues in person, over the phone, or electronically, and must stay updated on new technology to effectively assist users. Some of your responsibilites as an IT Support Specialist may include:
- Troubleshooting technical issues: Diagnosing and resolving problems with hardware, software, operating systems, and networks.
- Installing and configuring systems - setting up and maintaining computer systems, software, and peripherals.
- Managing user accounts - Creating, updating, and managing user accounts and access privileges.
- Training users: Teaching people how to use new computer equipment, software, and applications.
- Maintaining records: Keeping logs of daily activities, problems encountered, and the steps taken to resolve them.
- Providing user assistance: Answering user questions and guiding them through solutions for their technical problems.

Overall employment of computer support specialists is projected to decline 3% from 2024 to 2034. Despite declining employment, about 50,500 openings for computer support specialists are projected each year, on average, over the decade. All of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to other occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire. With experience and upskilling, computer support specialists can advance to higher-paying roles or management positions. The median annual wage for computer user support specialists was $60,340 in May 2024.
